The group had its beginning in chit funds business and later on entered the lending business through Shriram Transport Finance (Commercial Vehicle Finance) and Shriram City Union Finance (Consumer and MSME Finance).

They also have presence in the insurance sector through Shriram General Insurance, Shriram Life Insurance and Shriram Asset Management Co. The group has business interests in Chit Fund, Truck financing, Consumer & MSME finance, Life insurance, General Insurance, Stock Broking, Infrastructure & Project finance, Wealth Management, and Distribution of Financial Products. Shriram Group operates in 3 segments, namely- Financial Services, IT, and Others.

The others segment consists of non-banking financial company (NBFC) business, life and general insurance business, stock broking, distribution of financial products, real estate development, property development, and infrastructure development.
